A pneumatically or hydraulically damped coupling used to absorb forces generated by the contact of aircraft landing gear with a landing surface.

SUPPORT,SHOCK STRUT,HELICOPTER

TRUNNION STRUT,LANDING SYSTEMS

A machined casting used to anchor various aircraft systems to withstand impact with landing surfaces. It is used on such systems as landing gear, arresting gear, nose wheel steering, and the like, but is so constructed that it may pivot forward and backward.

An item or items employed individually or conjunctively to modify aircraft components.

SKID TUBE ASSEMBLY,AIRCRAFT

An item consisting of a metal tube and attaching hardware. It is used in conjunction with other fixed landing gear components to support a portion of the weight of an aircraft while on a landing surface.

RETAINER,DISK BRAKE,AIRCRAFT

An item of various shapes and cross-sections that may be flanged and that is designed to fit against brake disks allowing for proper position within a brake or disk housing. Excludes aircraft wheel brake.

GUIDE SHOE ASSEMBLY,LANDING GEAR

An assembly consisting of a machined casting and facing used to maintain alignemnt of landing gear when being raised or lowered.

PIN,METERING,LANDING GEAR

A PIN, TAPERED (as modified) mounted to the piston used to control but never shut off the flow of fluid through an orifice in the shock strut of aircraft landing gear.

BALLSCREW ASSEMBLY

A self-contained power transmitting device designed to convert rotary motion to linear (straight line) mechanical movement. Must be comprised of a ball nut, pillow block(s), screw shaft and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components.

PIN,TRUNNION

A weight bearing, cylindrical shaped landing gear component which provides a pivot point for the extension and retraction of landing gear.

INSERT,BALL RETURN,AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR

An item designed to fit into the ball return on a ball nut to guide or direct the balls onto the grooves.

FRAME SECTION,SKID TUBE ASSEMBLY,AIRCRAFT

A metallic tube specifically designed to form the cross member structure of a SKID TUBE ASSEMBLY, AIRCRAFT.

An item used in conjunction with other component parts to support a portion of weight of the undercarriage of an aircraft while on surface.

An item used as part of the nose landing gear uplock assembly.

COLLAR,TORQUE,LANDING GEAR

A metallic item of circular-shaped design with open center area to permit positioning over a shock strut cylinder or piston. It must have one or more mounting bosses to provide for attachment of torque arm(s), connecting link(s), or the like for desired directional control of the aircraft wheels. Thisdevice is utilized for both nose and main landing gear applications.

SKID SHOE KIT,HEAVY DUTY

An item which contains right and left skid shoes with all required hardware to modify the SKID TUBE ASSEMBLY, AIRCRAFT to accept the skid tubes.

STEERING UNIT,AIRCRAFT NOSE WHEEL

An unitized assembly which controls nosewheel direction during ground operation. Torsional force is produced from externally supplied high pressure hydraulic fluid. Component parts may include actuators, gear sets, pistons, rotors, sensors, servovalve assemblies, shafts, solenoid valves, and the like. The assembly may also accomplish a shimmy damping function.

PISTON,LANDING GEAR STRUT

A cylinder, closed at the lower end, which telescopes within an outer shock strut cylinder assembly. It may contain an integral metering pin or hydraulic damping device to control the rate of compression and extension travel. A wheel axle, pivot fork, or provisions for the mounting of torque arms and towing eyes may be included.

An item designed to support the aircraft landing gear in the extended or retracted position. Excludes DRAG BRACE, LANDING GEAR and DRAG LINK, LANDING GEAR.

BEAM ASSEMBLY,BOGIE,LANDING GEAR

An item which is pivoted, linking axles (front, rear, or inline) to each other and to the strut, post or leg.

FULCRUM ASSEMBLY,LANDING GEAR

An item which attaches to the top of the landing gear and is the support about which the landing gear pivots.

BRACKET,MOUNTING,LANDING GEAR

A bracket designed of various shapes that attaches to the landing gear for the purpose of positioning, aligning and/or supporting another item.

SAFETY PIN,WEAK,LANDING GEAR

An item in the shape of an axle the strength of which is less than the landing gear components. It is desired to shatter first and foremost to prevent the landing gear components from spoiling when the aircraft is towed. When breaking the towbar is disconnected from the landing gear preventing it from spoiling.

SENSOR,LANDING GEAR POSITION

A potentiometric device whose sensor wiper position is proportional to landing gear position. This allows the aircraft pilot to know the landing gear position at any time during actuation.

CANISTER,LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE

An item which is a component of a LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE. The upper part is linked to the PANEL,LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE by means of an axle&#59; the lower part is linked to the landing gear struct actuator joint.

PANEL,LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE

A metallic frame which is a component of a LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE,The upper part is linked to the aircraft structure by means of two axles and the lower part is linked to the CANISTER,LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE by means of an axle.

OUTER CYLINDER,LANDING GEAR STRUT

A cylinder, closed at the upper end, which houses the PISTON, LANDIONG GEAR STRUT. It may contain an air servicing valve and an orifice to allow fluid transfer from the piston during strut compression and extension. Provisions for attachment of TRUNNION PIN, DRAG BRACE(s), DRAG LINK(s), and TORQUE ARM(s) may also be included. Excludes LANDING GEAR, FIXED and LANDING GEAR, RETRACTABLE.

AXLE,LANDING GEAR

A bar or spindle, on which or with which, an aircraft landing gear wheel rotates.

DAMPER,SHIMMY

A mechanism which retards or nullifies angular vibration between two items.

DISC,BRAKE

A flat circular metallic item, a component of a disk type brake used primarily for frictional purposes.

LANDING GEAR,FIXED

A landing gear that has no means of retraction.

LANDING GEAR,RETRACTABLE

A landing gear that has means of retraction.

ARM ASSEMBLY,TORQUE,LANDING GEAR

A landing gear component consisting of an arm and bushing. Designed to connect the inner and outer cylinder of an aircraft landing gear and retain the wheel in an alignment.

JACK POINT,LANDING GEAR

An integral component of an aircraft landing gear used as a contact point for jacking aircraft.

DRAG BRACE,LANDING GEAR

An item designed to support the aircraft landing gear in the extended or the retracted position. Excludes LANDING GEAR, RETRACTABLE and LANDING GEAR, FIXED.

TOWING EYE,AIRCRAFT

A U- or eye-shaped component of an aircraft landing gear designed for attachment of a towbar or towing line.

CYLINDER AND PISTON ASSEMBLY,LANDING GEAR

The main shock absorption portion of an aircraft landing gear, consisting of the main cylinder and piston and other associated parts. May be with or without axle(s). Excludes LANDING GEAR, FIXED and LANDING GEAR, RETRACTABLE.

DRAG LINK,LANDING GEAR

An item designed to form a connection to transmit linear motion, either directly or indirectly between a pivot shaft and the landing gear of an aircraft. Excludes DRAG BRACE, LANDING GEAR.

ROD,PISTON,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

A cylindrical item with one end designed to mate with the piston of a linear actuating cylinder. The external end is designed for the attachment of a connection or the connection may be an integral part of the rod. The rod is designed to extend through a linear actuating cylinder cap, or the like.

SENSOR,WEIGHT ON WHEEL,LANDING GEAR

A potentiometric device whose sensor wiper position is proportional to the weight on landing gear wheels(s). This allows the aircraft pilot to know the weight on landing gear wheel(s) at any time during actuation.

AXLE,PINTLE,AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR

An axle (1) to support pivoting of the landing gear assembly for retraction and extension. An intefral rotary actuator provides the power for movement of the landing gear assembly. For items that are actuated using leverage see FULCRUM ASSEMBLY, LANDING GEAR, for axles that are attached to the landing gear wheel see AXLE (1), LANDING GEAR. CONTROL UNIT,STEERING,AIRCRAFT NOSE WHEEL

An item designed to produce an electrical signal to control the steering of an aircraft nosewheel.

CENTRE LOCKING MECHANISM,LANDING GEAR

A landing gear component to be used during towing activities of an aircraft. By unlocking the steering system unintentional movement of the nose landing gear is prevented. It is a device that is able to remove the hydraulic/electric control of the nose landing gear steering system during ground handling.

DISK BRAKE SET

A group of replacement components consisting of two or more DISK BRAKE.

TORQUE STRUT ASSEMBLY,LANDING GEAR

An assembly attached to the two pistons of the struts, mounted in tandem, to maintain correct alignment of the strut-wheel-tire assembly.

MECHANICAL FUSE

An item of various shapes and material, sized to rupture, shear and the like under the action of a predetermined mechanical force. It protects against mechanical damage and/or releases a mechanism.

WHEEL,LANDING GEAR

A wheel which balances and supports the weight of an airplane when in contact with solid surfaces. Includes wheels with solid molded tires.

BRAKE,DUAL DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. Two DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,SINGLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. A DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,EXPANDER TUBE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A frame designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle, and having provisions for housing an expander tube and brake blocks. b. An expander tube which is a flat rubber tube designed to be filled with brake fluid and thereby force brake blocks against the brake drum. c. Brake blocks which may be cemented to the expander tube or fitted into the frame above the expander tube.

BRAKE,MULTIPLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Metallic disks keyed to rotate with the wheel alternated with nonrotating disks keyed to the anchor bracket. See also BRAKE, SEGMENTED ROTOR.

BRAKE,SEGMENTED ROTOR

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Segments of brake lining attached to the nonrotating disks.

BRAKE,SHOE TYPE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A torque spider which is a disklike metal part designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle. b. One or more brake shoes with brake lining attached. c. A hydraulic cylinder(s) or mechanical linkage to provide the force by which the brake shoe is pressed against the brake drum.

LINK,WHEEL CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE

A metal device designed to be mounted between the wheel cylinder piston and brake shoe. Its function is to transmit the motion of the piston to the brake shoe.

LINK,ANCHOR,BRAKE SHOE

A one piece metal item, usually flat and of rectangular cross section, so designed to maintain alignment of the brake shoes.

CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,WHEEL

A cylinder designed to house the piston and other necessary component parts of a CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL.

CYLINDER ASSEMBLY,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,WHEEL

A device consisting of a CYLINDER, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL with a piston(s) and other component parts which is mounted to the back plate of a wheel. It uses the flow and pressure of a fluid to create the linear motion required to operate the brake shoes of a hydraulic brake system.

CYLINDER,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,MASTER

A cylinder, usually incorporating an integral reservoir, designed to house the necessary component parts of a CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER.

CYLINDER ASSEMBLY,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,MASTER

A device consisting of a reservoir and/or CYLINDER, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER with other components necessary to displace fluid from a central source for actuating the slave or wheel cylinders of a hydraulic brake system.

BRAKE DRUM

A circular shaped metal item designed to be connected to a machine or vehicle shaft or wheel and used to retard, stop or prevent motion by the application of pressure exerted by brake(s) or band(s).

CUP,HYDRAULIC BRAKE CYLINDER

A circular-shaped item of molded synthetic or natural rubber designed specifically to seal fluid pressure and prevent leakage within the cylinders of a vehicular hydraulic brake system. It is a component of CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER or CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, WHEEL. Excludes CUP, COMPRESSION.

PISTON,HYDRAULIC BRAKE,MASTER CYLINDER

PLATE,WEAR,BRAKE SHOE

A rigid replaceable metal item, designed to be mounted on the actuating or cam end of a brake shoe to receive the thrust of the operating cam.

LINING,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds, cut or molded to a specific size. It may be a segment or a complete lining. It is usually designed to be fastened to a shoe, disk, band, cone, or the like, but may be installed without fastening. It provides a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion. Excludes LINING MATERIAL, FRICTION.

WEIGHT,WHEEL BALANCING

A metal item designed to dynamically and statically balance the pneumatic tired wheels of a vehicle. The weight is usually attached to the rim by means of an integral spring steel clip.

BRAKE LINING KIT

A collection of items consisting of brake linings of specific size(s) together with rivets and/or bolts for fastening the lining to the original brake shoes. Excludes brake shoe kits containing the assembled brake shoes complete with linings, and also brake lining packaged in sheets or rolls.

RIM,WHEEL,PNEUMATIC TIRE

A circular metal item designed to mount on a WHEEL, PNEUMATIC TIRE to support and retain the tire. It may be of one piece or it may include a RING, LOCK, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL; RING, SIDE, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL; or RING, SIDE AND LOCK, AUTOMOTIVE WHEEL. For items with provisions for mounting on a separate hub capable of turning on a central axis, see WHEEL (as modified).

RING,ALIGNING,DUAL TIRE RIMS

A circular metal item, one piece or sectional, designed to be placed between the tire rims of a dual tire wheel to space and maintain alignment of the rims.

LINING MATERIAL,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds woven or molded into roll or sheet form of uniform width and thickness and may be fabricated with or without cork inserts. It is intended as the bulk material from which LINING, FRICTION may be fabricated for use on disks, shoes, or bands to provide a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion.

PUSH ROD,HYDRAULIC BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER

An item in the form of a rod with one end designed to mate with the socket of a PISTON, HYDRAULIC BRAKE, MASTER CYLINDER, the other end designed to connect with various forms of rod connectors.

PARTS KIT,AIR-HYDRAULIC BRAKE SLAVE CYLINDER

A parts kit for an air-hydraulic brake slave cylinder.

PLATE,BACKING,BRAKE

A rigid circular shaped metal item with a centrally located aperture. It has mounting holes and is specifically designed to mount and position the components of a BRAKE (as modified). It also serves to prevent dirt and other foreign matter from entering the braking mechanism. Excludes items which are used as a dust shield only.

CAP,GREASE

A cap, usually of metal, designed to retain lubricant and excludes foreign matter from bearings. It is normally used as an end closure on items designed to rotate on a shaft,such as a wheel hub, or fit into a housing at the end of a rotating shaft, or the like. Do not use if a more specific name applies. For items mounted by bolt holes, see COVER, ACCESS.

ADAPTER,BRAKE DRUM

A rigid circular shaped metal item, with a centrally located aperture. It is specifically designed to mount or secure a brake drum to a wheel hub. It is a component of a brake drum. Excludes PLATE, BACKING, BRAKE.

MANIFOLD,FLUID,AIRCRAFT

An enclosure with three (3) or more openings designed for use in aircraft de-icing, fuel, hydraulic, oil, pneumatic, and vacuum systems to collect and/or distribute fluids. It may contain valves or metering devices and the like. Excludes MANIFOLD, AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENTS.

LINING SET,FRICTION

Two or more friction linings grouped together for a clutch, brake, or the like. For items whose component parts do not have the same basic name, see PARTS KIT (as modified). See also BRAKE LINING KIT.

BRAKE SHOE

A metal item in the shape of an arc, with or without a replaceable friction lining on the surface of the shoe arc. When actuated by a cam, lever and/or hydraulic cylinder, it exerts pressure on a drum or wheel. Also, see BRAKE, SHOE TYPE.

BRAKE BAND AND LINING

A circular shaped flexible steel device, having a replaceable friction lining, designed to contract upon the outer surface or expand against the inner surface of a drum to retard or stop motion.

DISK BRAKE SHOE

A replaceable metal plate, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. It may be of circular, kidney, or rectangular shape. When mounted in a caliper cylinder housing, between brake disk and hydraulic or pneumatic piston(s), or wheel and caliper lever, it is so designed that actuated pressure, on the shoe friction pad, will retard or stop motion. Excludes BRAKE, DUAL DISK; BRAKE, SINGLE DISK; BRAKE SHOE; and DISK, BRAKE.

DISK BRAKE SHOE SET

A group of replacement components consisting of two or more DISK BRAKE SHOE, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. They may be of circular, kidney, or rectangular shape. They are so designed that, when mounted in a caliper cylinder housing, actuated pressure on the shoe friction pad will retard or stop motion. Excludes: BRAKE, DUAL DISK; BRAKE, SINGLE DISK.

PARTS KIT,BRAKE CHAMBER

A parts kit used to repair a CHAMBER, AIR BRAKE; or a CHAMBER, VACUUM BRAKE.

A collection of items consisting of one or more LINING, FRICTION and brake shoe frame(s) with or without fastening devices such as rivets, bolts, nuts, bonding agents, and the like. A metallic or nonmetallic item designed to function in a wheel cylinder or caliper of a hydraulic brake system.

CALIPER ASSEMBLY,DISC BRAKE

A U-shaped device with a floating, sliding or fixed mounting design. A device by which force is applied by mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum, or pneumatic actuation to slow or bring to a stop, a rotating rotor disc. It may contain any number of associated parts, such as pistons which may be offset or opposed to each other, caliper housings, bolts, support springs, bushings, sleeves, shields, bleed screws, dust boot, shoe retainers and the like. May also include brake-pads with assembled linings. Excludes rotor discs.

CALIPER,DISC BRAKE

A U-shaped device designed to house associated parts such as pistons, support springs, bushings, sleeves, shields, bleed screw, dust boot, shoe retainers, brake pads/linings, and the like. Excludes any repair parts or components.

ROTOR,DISC BRAKE

A flat circular metallic device with a center mounting area of various configuration (recessed, flat, protruding, shouldered, etc.). It is a component of a caliper type brake system designed with a flat machine braking surface which may be of a solid, ribbed or space designed for cooling purposes. For a rotor with a hub see ROTOR ASSEMBLY, DISC BRAKE.

ROTOR ASSEMBLY,DISC BRAKE

A flat circular metallic device with a center mounting area of various configuration (recessed, flat, protruding, shouldered, etc.), it also includes the mating hub, and may include items such as roller cups, studs, and the like. It is a component of a caliper type brake system designed with a flat machine braking surface which may be of a solid, ribbed or space designed for cooling purposes. A solid cylindrical shaped item used on aircraft brake systems to insulate the hydraulic piston against the heat generated by the disc brakes.

A metallic item used to protect a wheel or brake flange and tire from heat.

WHEEL HALF,AIRCRAFT

A circular item which is joined with a similar item to form a wheel. It is designed to provide for the attachment of various related components, such as bearings, balance weights, heat shield(s), and the like.

SENSOR,ANTI-LOCK BRAKE,AIRCRAFT

A sacrificial metallic device formed to protect aircraft brake rotors, stators, and pressure plates from shock stresses during brake engagements. It also provides oxidation protection.

PISTON INSULATOR,THERMAL,BRAKE

A phenolic or metallic composite device of various shapes and sizes located between brake actuating pistons and the pressure plate. It prevents the heat transfer from the pressure plate into the piston which could damage seals and hydraulic fluid within the piston housing.

This signal is intended to be used as a timing pulse for vibration signal processing requiring speed-position synchronization. A component of an aircraft deicing system which has heating resistances. It is designed to be mounted on external fixed or moving aircraft components such as wings or foils leading edge, antennas, propellers, rotary wing blades and the like. POD,AIRCRAFT

A streamlined, multiapplication, self-contained unit mounted externally to an aircraft. It is designed to house or accommodate cameras, sensors, refueling hoses, propulsion systems, cargo, personnel and the like. It is detachable and does not come equipped with or contain any of the items mentioned above or any electrical/electronic devices.

PEDAL ASSEMBLY,CONTROL

A device consisting of several PEDAL, CONTROL which are mechanically interconnected and/or have a common mounting. A bracket may be included. Excludes CONVERSION KIT, VEHICLE, DRIVING SCHOOL&#59; PEDAL, CONTROL.

TORQUE TUBE ASSEMBLY,AIRCRAFT

Transfers twisting/turning motion from one point to another. May include arm assemblies, tubing and various hardware items.

WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY

ASSEMBLY CONSISTS OF THE WIPER BLADES, ARM, MOTOR, HEATER AND OTHER NECESSARY ITEMS FOR ATTACHMENT. MAY INCLUDE WIRING. DOES NOT INCLUDE THE CONTROLLER MECHANISM.

ROLLER,ROLLER FAIRLEAD

A cylindrical item with an essentially crowned face used for guiding or changing direction of ropes, cables, wires, bands or like items. The item may form part of a FAIRLEAD, ROLLER or FAIRLEAD, ROLLER AND SHEAVE or may be used as a separate item Excludes PULLEY, FLAT; PULLEY, GROOVE and PULLEY, CONE.

POUCH,URINE COLLECTION,AIRCRAFT PILOT

A device installed on, but not permanently fixed to, an aircraft crew station. It is designed to be used by pilots during flight for urinary relief. It may contain a bag or a pad for urine collection and absorption.

REPAIR KIT,MECHANICAL TRANSMISSION

A repair kit consisting of tools and parts as are required for the repair of worn or damaged parts of a TRANSMISSION, MECHANICAL.

GAGE AND VALVE ASSEMBLY

An assembly of items consisting of one or more gages and one or more valves joined together on a common mount.

BALLSCREW ASSEMBLY

A self-contained power transmitting device designed to convert rotary motion to linear (straight line) mechanical movement. Must be comprised of a ball nut, pillow block(s), screw shaft and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components.

LEG ASSEMBLY,SEAT,AIRCRAFT

A rigid metallic item which, in conjunction with a frame, aids in the support of SEAT (1), AIRCRAFT. It must have provisions for guide attachment hardware. See SEAT (1), AIRCRAFT EJECTION.

SUPPORT,HEAD,SEAT

An item designed to provide support and/or position to the head. It is designed to be mounted or installed on a FRAME, SEAT, AIRCRAFT.

A support fabricated from metallic material specifically designed to strengthen and/or support various parts of the FRAME, SEAT, AIRCRAFT

An item fabricated from nonmetallic material specifically designed to enclose, partially or completely, the frame assembly of a crew member seat, for the physical protection of personnel. May include fastening devices.

FRAME SECTION,SEAT,AIRCRAFT

A prefabricated item of various sizes and shapes designed to be joined with other sections of frame work. This will form the basic structure of a frame for a SEAT, AIRCRAFT.

CONTAINER,PARACHUTE,SEAT

An item which is attached to a seat or is part of the seat and stores a parachute.

HOLDER,CUP,AIRCRAFT

An item specifically designed to hold or support a cup within the flight station or galley of an aircraft. May include mounting bracket.

ELBOW,CONTROL STICK,AIRCRAFT

A metallic fitting fabricated in the form of an elbow and having threaded or other connecting facilities at each end. The item is an integral component of a CONTROL STICK, AIRCRAFT.

RAIL,ACCESSORY,AIRCRAFT

A metallic item designed to guide and to secure aircraft accessories such as aircraft furniture, litter attaching supports and the like. For item which are integral parts of the basic structural airframe, see RAIL, AIRFRAME, AIRCRAFT.

FOOTREST,AIRCRAFT SEAT

An item specifically designed to attach to an aircraft seat to provide adequate place for personnel to rest feet.

RECEPTACLE ASSEMBLY,FLIGHT REFUELING PROBE

An item which is located at the end of the funnel to accomodate the refueling probe. It includes the COLLAR, RECEPTION COUPLING, FLIGHT REFUELING.

GEARBOX ASSEMBLY,AIRCRAFT

An assembly of gears, shaft and bearings within a housing. It may or may not be designed to change direction or rotary motion or have a torque differential from input or output. May include a hydraulic motor, brake and the like. Excludes gearboxes that are turbine engine driven.

UPLOCK ASSEMBLY,DOOR,AIRCRAFT

A device designed to secure an entrance barrier in an up and locked position for flight or ground use.

UPLOCK ASSEMBLY,SPOILER,WEAPONS BAY,AIRCRAFT

A device designed to secure the plate(s) in an up and locked position until required.

POSITIONER,CARGO RAMP,AIRCRAFT

A device designed to be installed in the cargo ramp arms when aircraft is configured for air delivery drop. The device allows the ramp to be lowered to a predetermined position.

HARNESS SET,AIRCRAFT SAFETY

An arrangement of a BELT, AIRCRAFT SAFETY and HARNESS, AIRCRAFT SAFETY shoulder designed to secure a person to a seat (or in a desired position) in an aircraft, as a safety measure. It may include an inertia reel and the necessary attachments. Includes like items used on an air-cushion vehicle.

A device used in control systems to maintain tautness of the wire rope within the preselected limits. The device mechanically compensates for the effect of temperature variation and structural deflection.

A device consisting of gears designed to regulate the stroke of a WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY.

A foam which hardens and is used to surround an item; i.e., an internal fuel tank. It provides protection from hostile fire and holds the item in position.

An item designed to activate the catapult seat mechanism.

An item which forms part of a POD, AIRCRAFT. It can be designed as a nose, aft or center section and may include mounts, cables, plugs, or other components depending on the application.

KNIFE,CANOPY PUNCTURER

An item with a punching blade, used for smashing an aircraft cockpit enclosure.

SHEATH,KNIFE,CANOPY PUNCTURER

An item that encloses the blade of a KNIFE, CANOPY PUNCTURER.

CASE,STOWAGE,MAPS AND DATA

An item designed to provide secure stowage for maps and/or miscellaneous data in the cockpit. The stowage case is mounted on or above the crew station console.

An item which transfers torque and/or push/pull force from one point to another. May include arm assemblies, tubing and various hardware items.

An electrically conductive device designed to harmlessly dissipate static electricity from the surfaces of an aircraft.

An item designed to guide and secure the seat to the aircraft structure. It may be fixed or adjustable.

An item designed to permit motion for repositioning and locking of the seat.

An item used to permit manual, rotary or linear motion to a shaft or other device. It may have reference markings.

An item, containing no valves, designed to distribute bleed air. It is used in aircraft rain removal systems.

An item which simulates the weight of a component or a unit in an aircraft and which does not change the flight characteristics of the aircraft. It may include devices for attaching plug-in and screw-type terminals (e.g. electric, hydraulic, mechanical).

CABLE ASSEMBLY,DISCONNECT,AIRCRAFT EJECTION SEAT

A definite length of electrical cable or a group of electrical cables used in the egress sequencing of ejection seats.

COVER,CREW MATTRESS

A form fitting item designed to provide environmental protection and crew comfort during aircraft operations.

EXTINGUISHER,FIRE,AIRCRAFT

A pressurized unit with fire extinguishing agent that can be manually or automatically released. Consists of cylinders, containers, fittings, and the like.

FILLER NECK,AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS

A metallic tubular item specifically designed for directing the flow of a fluid, and must accommodate the CAP (as modified) or BREATHER on one end. The opposite end has provisions for mounting directly on, or indirectly through a pipe, tube, or hose to an aircraft component. It may have means for overflow. A part of a refueling boom, the strength of which is less than the other components. It is designed to shatter first and foremost to prevent the other parts of the assembly from spoiling.

A flexible item composed of one or more kinds of fibers prefabricated into various shapes and sizes. It may have a vapor barrier and is covered on one or both sides with a jacket material such as vinyl or other sheet material. It may have mounting provisions such as holes or snaps to facilitate installation. It is designed to cover cargo compartments and the like to prevent the transfer of heat and/or sound. A wire inlet screen designed to fit into an aircraft turbine air intake to prevent the entrance of foreign matter during flight. Excludes: SHIELD, AIRCRAFT GROUND SERVICING.

MOQUETTE,AIRCRAFT

A usually machine-made carpet having pile tufts to form the permanent covering of the whole surface of the floor on board airliners.

BODY,CONTROL STICK,AIRCRAFT

A metal structural assembly which is a component of a CONTROL STICK, AIRCRAFT.

HANDLE,LEVER CONTROL

A hand grip, made of rubber, plastic, or other material, and designed to be mounted on a LEVER, CONTROL to provide a formed gripping shape.

LEVER,CONTROL

A rigid item specifically designed to actuate a CONTROL ASSEMBLY, QUADRANT.

A device used on aircraft designed to increase, decrease, and/or reverse the rotation between the drive and driven shaft or shafts. UNIVERSAL JOINT,AIRCRAFT

A flexible connection designed for aircraft applications which permits rotary motion to be transmitted between two shafts located at an angle to each other. The angle between the shafts may be continually varied within certain limits; the connecting ends must have either a flange, hub, or splined stub shaft; the plain portion of a splined stub shaft must not exceed the length of the splines. A self-contained power transmitting device designed to operate a given object(s) with energy generated from hydraulic pressure in a form of linear mechanical movement. Comprised of a cylinder assembly, limit switches, cables, connectors and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components. CONTROL PANEL,AIRCRAFT

An enclosure which includes mounts and protects such items as switches, contactors, relays, connectors, printed cards, and the like. It gathers controls and signalization functions such as fuel pumps, hydraulic ancillaries, navigation and armament systems, electronic countermeasures, and the like. It is located outside and under the aircraft and thus facilitates the acces when the aircraft is on the ground.

FLANGE,COMPANION,AIRCRAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT

An item designed for aircraft application having a flange on one end with provisions for a shaft on the other end. Designed to mate with the flange of a YOKE, UNIVERSAL JOINT for the purpose of transmitting rotory motion.

RECOVERY SEQUENCER,EJECTION SEAT,AIRCRAFT

A device which provides automatic activation, at preset intervals, of the aircraft crewmember ejection seat escape systems and subsystems. It activates immediately after the seat is ejected from the aircraft. It contains logic circuitry to select the best mode of operation for a full range of escape conditions based upon speed and altitude at the time of ejection. It also contains internal thermal batteries, when activated, provides power to operate timing circuits and initiate electrical impulses that actuate subsystem ballistic devices.

An item designed to offer protection to the intricate parts of a radome lock assembly.

An item designed to provide the initiating action required to raise and lower the aircraft landing gear.

An inclosure which includes mounts and electrical devices for operation of the hoist.

The item consists of a structural box enclosing the hydraulic lines, valves, cylinders, mechanical components, receptacle, and door.

An adjustable arrangement of straps and hardware attached to a reinforced canvas frame, designed for use by personnel engaged in hoisting from helicopter in flight. It protects the wearer from falling out from the aircraft. It may be equipped with a LIFEBOAT, INFLATABLE. Excludes HARNESS, PERSONNEL, CARGO HANDLING and HARNESS SET, AIRCRAFT SAFETY.

NOZZLE,AERIAL PRESSURE REFUELING

An item designed to engage with RECEPTACLE ASSEMBLY, FLIGHT REFUELING PROBE, allowing the transfer of fuel in flight.

PEDESTAL,AIRCRAFT CONTROL

An item designed to attach and support controls, control panels, and associated equipment in the aircraft. It is mounted to the aircraft structure.

FLOTATION BAG,AIRCRAFT

A specially designed airbag of various shapes and sizes, located either forward, to the side, or aft on the aircraft, which, when inflated, will support an aircraft in water. It can be fabricated of any watertight and airtight material.

CONTAINER,FLOTATION BAG,AIRCRAFT

A specially designed, lightweight container, installed on the aircraft airframe, which is used to securely hold and protect a FLOTATION BAG, AIRCRAFT until it is deployed.

RETAINER,FLOTATION BAG,AIRCRAFT

A flat, even sheet of strong, lightweight material which protects and secures a FLOTATION BAG, AIRCRAFT inside a CONTAINER, FLOTATION BAG, AIRCRAFT. It is installed with laces or snaps and is released and jettisoned instantaneously when the aircraft flotation system is actuated.

DRUM,WINCH,AIRCRAFT

A cylindrical item which accommodates and secures, on the periphery, a rope, line, chain, or the like, and is used on a WINCH, AIRCRAFT MOUNTED.

YOKE,UNIVERSAL JOINT,AIRCRAFT

A component of a universal joint designed for aircraft application. Consists of a fork-like device to accommodate the spider and bearings of universal joint by various attaching methods. The opposite end must have either a flange, hub, or splined stub shaft which is designed to be attached to a driving or driven member. An aircraft item with a universal joint on one or both ends. For items with one universal joint, the opposite end may have a yoke, a yoke with a spider, or a shaft. For items without a universal joint, see PROPELLER SHAFT (as modified).

A metallic or nonmetallic item, without a frame, specifically designed with a polished or smooth surface that forms images by reflection. It may be round, square, or rectangular in shape. It may be flat for complete, full range viewing or convex for close in viewing. It may be provided with adhesive backing for stick-on mounting. An item of metal or coated glass encased in a frame which is designed for attachment to various types of mounting brackets. May be round, square, or rectangular in shape and may be convex. A controller which is a manually or remotely operated electrical item designed to control movements and directions of a winch. It may be cabin mounted, panel mounted or winch mounted.

HANDLE UNIT,DOOR

A combination of two HANDLE DOOR or one HANDLE, DOOR and a DOORKNOB. A square pin, a locking cylinder, bushings, rosettes and mounting hardward may be included.

PANEL,INTERIOR LINING,AIRCRAFT

A preformed metallic/nonmetallic item specifically designed for mounting on the inside of the fuselage of an aircraft. It is of a special size, shape, and thickness to conform to the contour of the aircraft. It conceals cavities, controls, tubing, wiring and the like, as well as provides a sound barrier. An item which receives air pressure from the pitot static system to actuate the safety lap belt initiator lever causing the safety lap belt to open in one second at an airspeed of 310 knots or below. This actuation is performed during the initial motion at the seat as it is being ejected. The actuator will not operate above the predetermined airspeed.

CONTROL COLUMN,AIRCRAFT

A device for maintaining control of an aircraft about its pitch and roll axis. It consists of a CONTROL WHEEL, AIRCRAFT mounted at the upper end of a lever, the wheel being turned to control the aircraft about its roll axis, the lever being pushed forward or pulled back to control the aircraft about its pitch axis, excludes operation of trim tabs or the like.

CONTROL STICK,AIRCRAFT

A lever used for maintaining control of an aircraft about its pitch and roll axis. Excludes operation of trim tabs or the like. It is distinguished from a CONTROL COLUMN in that its side to side movement controls the aircraft about its roll axis.

CONTROL WHEEL,AIRCRAFT

A device for maintaining control of an aircraft about its roll axis. It may be of various shapes but it must have a pivot point from which rotary motion may be obtained. SURVIVAL KIT CONTAINER,AIRCRAFT SEAT

A rigid box with or without a lid, or a pack, designed as a component of an aircraft seat to hold survival and/or emergency breathing equipment. An item designed to be attached to the underside of a helicopter fuselage to provide space for transporting troops, litter patients, vehicles and/or cargo. Item is designed for quick attachment and detachment, and is provided with wheels and tow bar adapter for ground mobility.

A bracket designed to attach a windshield wiper assembly to the skin of an aircraft. Attachment screws may be included.

An item which constitues the electrical or electronical control component of the heating of a PITOT, TUBE.

An item designed to produce an electrical signal to control the windshield wiper speed depending on weather conditions.

CONTROL BOX,NITROGEN GENERATOR,HELICOPTER

A shield attached above the windshield or window of an aircraft designed primarily to protect the aircraft operator(s) from the glare of the sun.

DRAIN-VENT,AIRCRAFT

An opening of various shapes designed to allow single or multiple fluids to drain or vent usually to the exterior of the aircraft. EXCLUDES: Grille, Metal

SUPPORT,CALF,EJECTION SEAT

An item mounted on an ejection seat and designed to support aircraft crewmember calves when the seat is ejected.

HEADREST,AIRCRAFT EJECTION SEAT

A rigid or semi-rigid frame covered with a resilient padding material and an upholstered covering of cotton, leather, plastic or the like. It is firmly mounted to the top of a SEAT, AIRCRAFT EJECTION frame and designed to limit backward head travel resulting from impact shocks. Excludes items specifically designed as a backrest.

STABILIZER,AIRCRAFT EJECTION SEAT

A flat item designed to be mounted on each side of a SEAT,AIRCRAFT EJECTION sitting base. It is automatically deployed from the beginning of ejection in order to maintain seat stability until drogue deployment.

LINING,SUPPLEMENTAL,SMALL ARMS-FRAGMENTATION PROTECTIVE

A preformed protective covering designed for mounting on the interior of the fuselage of an aircraft to protect occupants from small arms fire and the like. It may be made from metallic or non-metallac materials, either in sections or in one piece, and is designed for removal when not mission essential. It may have integral fittings for installation. HEADREST,SEAT,AIRCRAFT

An item which simulates the weight and the shape of a LOADER, CHAFF DISPENSER, AIRCRAFT and replaces it without changing the flight characteristics of the aircraft.

An electronic enclosure, which controls the interface between the POD, AIRCRAFT REFUELING and the flight engineer. Item is capable of providing status, commands and control functions during in-flight refueling operations.

POD,AIRCRAFT REFUELING

A self-contained unit mounted externally to the aircraft. It is designed to accommodate and may include refueling hoses, drogue, drum, fairings, door assemblies and associated components necessary for aerial refueling operations.

TOW HOOK SUBASSEMBLY

A grouping of integrated components which allow the automatic deployment and retrieval of various towed body sensors. The subassembly uses capture and transfer devices for the tow ball, to and from the tow point and docking station. Excludes: MINE SWEEPING EQUIPMENT.

CABLE CATCH ASSEMBLY

A tow cable capture device designed for relief of the load from the winch by clamping over the tow stop during the transport of the sensor/tow body and holding it secure.

DOCKING STATION ASSEMBLY,SONAR

A capture and seating device which aligns the tow ball and tow cable fairings of the tow hook assembly. Designed to enable the sensor deployment system to launch and recover various sensors.

BRAKE,BAND TYPE

A circular shaped flexible or hinged device, and an attached replaceable friction lining with associated engagement and release linkage. It stops or slows the motion of revolving elements by contracting upon the outer surface or expanding upon the inner surface of a drum.

RESTRAINT ASSEMBLY,SONAR EQUIPMENT

An item of various configurations used to support and restrain sonar equipment attached to an airframe, aircraft equipment and the like. It may include holes for mounting purposes or to form an assembly. Excludes: BRACKET, MOUNTING and BRACKET, STRUCTURAL COMPONENT, AIRCRAFT.

LADDER-PLATFORM,ACCESS

An onboard folding assembly,that provides access to the aircraft.It may be used to access dispensers for reloading,it has fasteners allowing attachment to the aircraft.

GUIDE RAILS,AIRCRAFT EJECTION SEAT

A structure which is the interface between the SEAT, AIRCRAFT EJECTION and the aircraft. It guides the seat on its movement by means of a set of rollers on the back edges of the sides or by means of slippers on the inside of the main beam assembly.

SLING HOOK,UNDERSLUNG,HELICOPTER

A hook mounted under a helicopter with an electromechanical release feature. The item is used specifically for aerial delivery.

BOX,TOOLS STOWAGE,AIRCRAFT

A container which is an integral part of an aircraft and used to provide protection and/or stowage for tools, technical documents and the like used by maintenance personnel.

FLANGE,HOSE REEL DRUM

An item usually flat and circular which is mounted on the two sides of a DRUM, HOSE REEL to constitute a REEL ASSEMBLY, HOSE. Excludes FLANGE, REEL, CABLE.

BASE,AIRCRAFT CONTROL STICK

An item consisting of two or more elements. The upper part is fixed on a CONTROL STICK, AIRCRAFT and slides on the lower part. It is designed to protect the stop plate of the control stick. Excludes BOOT, AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS.

COLLECTOR-DRAIN,AIRCRAFT

An item designed to collect dripping water from personnel recovered by a helicopter or amphibious aircraft after being rescued. It is closed around the interior perimeter except for the open side along the aircraft door. Water collected is drained outside the aircraft by the open side.

END CAP,AIRCRAFT POD

This item is usually circular and completes the tail section of some POD, AIRCRAFT. It does not include electronic components. For items that include electronic components, see END CAP ASSEMBLY, ELECTRONIC, AIRCRAFT POD.

TABLE,FOLDING,MOUNTED

A flat item, usually without legs, designed to be mounted in an aircraft, a vehicle, or a boat. It allows for support of various items for the convenience of the pilot, the driver, the passenger, and the like. It may include mounting hardware. Excludes TABLE,FOLDING LEGS.

GLASS HOLDER

An item usually round, designed to fit to several sizes of container. It allows to support a glass, a tumbler, or other container being able to contain a drink for the convenience of the pilot, the driver or the passenger, and the like. It can be folding, be removable or be incorporated into a cockpit or an armchair, etc. It may include mounting hardware.

WINDOW WASHER ASSEMBLY

A collection of items used to spray fluid to clean a window. May include a reservoir, pump, nozzles, tubing, hoses, hose couplings, mounting attachments and the like.

NOZZLE,WINDOW WASHER

An item designed to direct and control a stream of fluid to a window. May include bracket for mounting.

RESERVOIR,WINDOW WASHER

A container used for the storage and dispensing of fluid over a window for cleaning purposes. May include mounting attachments and/or pump. See also WINDOW WASHER ASSEMBLY.

PARTS KIT,WINDOW WASHER

A parts kit for a WINDOW WASHER ASSEMBLY.

PUMP,WINDOW WASHER

A device designed to pressurize and deliver fluid to clean window(s). May contain a motor or other actuating device, powered by compressed air, electric current, or vacuum, or may be actuated by a separate power source, including hand or foot operation.

CUSHION,HEADREST,AIRCRAFT SEAT

TELESCOPING SUPPORT

An item which is designed to be extended or compressed by the sliding of overlapping sections used to keep open hatches, doors and the like. May be attached by means of the thread, pin or bolt.

COMPUTER,SPECIAL PURPOSE

One or more computers which may or may not have one or more associated software designed to perform one or more specific tasks. For a computer not designed for a specific task, see COMPUTER DIGITAL. Do not use if a more specific name applies.

CARRIAGE PLATE ASSEMBLY

Item may be constructed of plastic or metal. Moves in a predetermined path and carries and/or supports other parts and includes the rollers.

FRAME,SEAT BACK

This structure is a component of a SEAT, VEHICULAR or SEAT, AIRCRAFT or similar item. This may be the entire back portion of the seat. It supports the back of the person sitting in the seat. STOWAGE COMPARTMENT

An item of various shapes and materials designed to deposit small items. It is integrated in a PANEL,DASH (80347), a PANEL INTERIOR DOOR VEHICLE (40262), etc. It can be provided with fixing and/or locking system.

ACTUATOR,ELECTRO-HYDROSTATIC,LINEAR

A self-contained power transmitting device designed to convert electrical energy into controlled hydraulic force, in the form of linear (straight line) hydraulic movement. Comprised of an electrical motor(s), gear box(es), hydraulic cylinders, limit switch(es), and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components.

MECHANICAL FUSE

An item of various shapes and material, sized to rupture, shear and the like under the action of a predetermined mechanical force. It protects against mechanical damage and/or releases a mechanism.

HOUSING(2),WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY

An item designed to mount and protect the components of a WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY (INC:42063).

SHEATH,KNIFE

An item designed to protect the blade of a knife by enclosing or covering it. It may have a snap fastener, flap closure and the like used to hold the knife into the holder. It may have a loop, clamp, and the like allowing it to be attached to a belt, bag and the like for carry.

PARACHUTE,AIRCRAFT,DECELERATION

A parachute used to decelerate the forward speed of an aircraft on landing, by acting as a drag.

A man-carrying parachute attached to the person, which has the pack placed at the wearer's back, and is opened at will after the jump has been initiated.

A man-carrying parachute attached to the person, which has the pack placed at the wearer's chest, and is opened at will after the jump has been initiated.

PARACHUTE,PERSONNEL,SEAT

A man-carrying parachute attached to the person, which has the pack placed to be used as a seat, and is opened at will after the jump has been initiated.

PARACHUTE,PERSONNEL,TROOP BACK

A man-carrying parachute attached to the person, the pack being placed at the wearer's back. It has a static line and/or a rip cord and may be used for premeditated jumps in which the opening of the pack and canopy is controlled in the aircraft or it may be opened at will after the jump. It has provisions for the attachment of a PARACHUTE, RESERVE, PERSONNEL, TROOP CHEST.

PARACHUTE,PERSONNEL,RESCUE

An item designed to retard the descent through the air of a man engaged in an air rescue mission. The major components are a main canopy having a V-slot for control during descent, a reserve canopy and a harness assembly with slip risers. A rubberized flat strip having a hook at each extremity, and designed to aid in drawing back the parachute pack flaps, and to hasten the release of the parachute canopy.

A complete container in which the parachute canopy of a cargo parachute is folded.

The container is designed as a recess which may or may not include an oxygen bottle. It is used and provided with a means for attachment to the harness and pack of a PARACHUTE, PERSONNEL, SEAT.

PAD,BACK,PARACHUTE HARNESS

PILOT CHUTE

A small parachute canopy attached to a larger canopy to actuate and accelerate the opening of the load bearing canopy. When used in conjunction with personnel parachutes, it is usually equipped with a spring opening device. When it is mounted on a tandem parachute, it retards and stabilizes, before the opening of the load bearing canopy.

RIP CORD,PARACHUTE

A cord or cable having a hand grip and locking pin, which when pulled, will permit the parachute pack to open.

A line, cable, or webbing with an attaching device at either end, intended to extend the length of the parachute static line.

A device for locking and releasing all straps, that secure the wearer in a harness, at one central point. One operation instantly permits the harness to fall from the wearer.

EXTENSION,EXTRACTION LINE

An item specifically designed to provide an extension between the extraction bar assembly and the extraction line to allow attaching and detaching of the extraction parachute at the free end of the extraction line. This item facilitates the removal of the extraction parachute and extraction line from the rigged load without raising the platform.

RISER,PARACHUTE,AIRCRAFT DECELERATION

An arrangement of straps and hardware which is attached to the canopy suspension line connector links and harness of an aircraft deceleration parachute.

RISER EXTENSION,PARACHUTE

An arrangement of straps and hardware which is attached to the canopy suspension line connector links and to the harness of a personnel parachute or PARACHUTE,CARGO. It functions as, or as an extension of, the riser straps of ajettisonable or adjustable type parachute.

A net used for aircraft delivery of cargo. It may be designed to be attached to a parachute to be dropped from an aircraft; or it may be designed to be attached to a lifting-hook(s) either by a sling or by direct connection to a rotary-wing aircraft.

SLING,CARGO,AERIAL DELIVERY

A sling, with fitting and fasteners used for the delivery of cargo. It is dropped from an aircraft to the ground by parachute.

SLING,MULTIPLE LEG

A sling fabricated from chain, rope, or rod and consisting of two or more lengths or legs, each having one end secured to a common top attachment, and with or without attachments or built-in loops at the lower ends. It may include SPREADER, SLING, but does not include a BEAM, HOISTING. Do not use if a more specific name applies. Excludes chain assemblies and SLING, DRUM LIFTING. MASK,OXYGEN

A device consisting of a facepiece which partially covers the face, having a breathing tube and a coupling for connecting to a regulated supply of oxygen. One of the cords that suspend the harness of a parachute from the canopy.

The air or gas is drawn in axially and discharged radially or drawn in radially and discharged axially by centrifugal force through an outlet in the housing.

HEATER,AIRCRAFT

A heater used to raise the temperature of the air in the interior of aircraft in which it is installed. Circulation of the heated air may be achieved by an integral blower or fan. Excludes HEATER PACKAGE, AIRCRAFT, external type heaters, and portable type heaters.

FILTER ELEMENT,AIR CONDITIONING

A replaceable device designed to remove dust, pollen or other foreign matter from the air passing through it. The removal of particles is accomplished by porous fibrous or shredded material (metallic or nonmetallic) which is loosely woven or matted and confined in a frame or retained between perforated sheets of firmer material. It is designed to fit into air conditioners, ventilation systems and hot air furnaces. It may have facilities for radio frequency/electromagnetic interference shielding. The filter may be cleaned by the use of compressed air, blown through the filter element, or by using water and a suitable detergent for cleaning purposes which would extend the life of the filter.

INDICATOR,OXYGEN FLOW

An indicator which visually shows when oxygen is flowing through an oxygen breathing system.

REGULATOR,OXYGEN,BAROMETRIC CONTINUOUS FLOW

A regulator designed to maintain a constant flow of breathing oxygen in predetermined amounts depending on the altitude at which it is being used.

REGULATOR,OXYGEN,DEMAND

A regulator designed to deliver pure breathing oxygen automatically when the user inhales, within a maximum operating altitude of 35,000 feet (10,668 m).

REGULATOR,OXYGEN,DILUTER DEMAND

A regulator which incorporates a mechanism to mix air with oxygen up to predetermined altitudes. At the predetermined altitude the regulator automatically delivers pure oxygen.

DEFLECTOR,DIRT AND LIQUID

An item so shaped as to deflect one or more of the following: dust, dirt, grease, oil, or liquid into a desired direction or away from a particular area. Can be attached to a stationary or with a revolving part.May or may notbe a mechanical device.

MANIFOLD,GAS CYLINDER

A device designed to accommodate the attachment of two or more gas cylinders to permit centralization of supply and provide large quantities of gas at constant pressure to single outlet or service line. Excludes MANIFOLD,DIVER'S,HELIUM-OXYGEN and items with facilities for charging or recharging the cylinders connected thereto.

CONVERTER,LIQUID OXYGEN

A unit consisting of a jacketed container, with or without a heat source, used to convert liquid oxygen into gasous breathing oxygen. See also CONVERTER, LIQUID OXYGEN PUMPING METHOD.

A device consisting of a facepiece which partially covers the face, having a breathing tube and a coupling for connecting to a regulated supply of oxygen. The device may be of the rebreathing type or of the demand type and may be used for rescue operation or to supply the wearer with oxygen when flying at high altitudes. It may include regulating device(s) but does not include oxygen cylinder(s). Excludes MASK, ORONASAL.

NOSEPIECE,OXYGEN MASK

A rigid item which serves as a reinforcement for the nose region and has accommodations to hold in place the elastic band of the oxygen mask.

CANISTER,OXYGEN GENERATING,BREATHING APPARATUS

A metal container filled with chemicals which absorb carbon dioxide and moisture from exhaled breath and generates oxygen for breathing. It is designed for use with a BREATHING APPARATUS, OXYGEN GENERATING. An item designed for use in the removal of moisture from air or gas pressure lines. Excludes SEPARATOR, PIPELINE.

An adapter designed to connect a compressed gas cylinder valve outlet to a regulator, charging connection, or other mating part having a different connection for the same gas.

COVER,FLUID FILTER

A rigid item of various shapes designed as a component of a fluid filter, acting as the cover and retaining the filter element in place. The item does not have an inlet or outlet connection. IGNITER,SPARK,AIRCRAFT HEATER

An item having one or more electrodes arranged to form an air gap across which an electric spark is introduced and discharged to ignite fuel and air mixture in an aircraft heater. In heaters designed for the single electrode type, two plugs or one plug and one electrode are required within the combustion chamber in proper placement to effect the air gap. An igniter plug with two or more electrodes differs from a spark plug by always having cooling facilities in the form of holes or slots in the plug casing to allow entry of air currents around the electrodes. Excludes SPARK PLUG; GLOW PLUG and ELECTRODE.

CANISTER,CARBON DIOXIDE ABSORBENT,OXYGEN REBREATHING UNIT

A leak-proof, pressure-tight metal container designed for use with a closed-circuit oxygen rebreathing unit. It is designed to be filled with chemicals which absorb carbon dioxide and moisture from exhaled breath. the canister may be refilled when chemicals are exhausted. An item in the form of one or more thin flexible sheets normally designed to form a tight seal between chambers of a valve, and to transmit motion to a valve disk either directly or through a mechanical linkage. The surface of the item(s) may not be formed or molded to have a beaded or rolled edge, ribs, or any other raised surfaces. The item may contain bolt holes and/or a center hole. DIFFUSER,AIR,AIRCRAFT HEATING AND VENTILATING

HEAT EXCHANGER,AIR TO AIR,AIRCRAFT

A heat transfer device designed to lower compressed air temperature to an acceptable level by passing it through tubes and flowing ducted ram air over the tubes, heat of the compressed air is transferred to the ram air reducing the temperature. Consists of a sheet metal housing with ram air connection(s) with or without ducts, a tubular type core, inlet and outlet ports. May contain a shutoff valve. Normally used in aircraft air conditioning and/or air induction systems.

HEAT EXCHANGER,AIR TO WATER,AIRCRAFT

A heat transfer device designed to lower compressed air temperature to an acceptable level by passing it through an exchanger core immersed in a tank of water. The heat of the air is absorbed by the water causing the water to boil and carry the heat off as steam reducing the air temperature. May contain a water tank and/or a collector or condensor section turning a portion of the steam back into water conserving the water supply. Contains air inlet and outlet ports. May incorporate an air bypass outlet and a steam vent port. Normally used in aircraft air conditioning systems.

IMPELLER WHEEL,AIRCRAFT COOLING TURBINE

An item consisting of blades, vanes or paddles equally spaced around the periphery or face of a hub, rotor or wheel. It is turbine wheel or shaft driven. Designed primarily as a means for absorbing the energy and to act as a governing force for a turbine wheel. Also aids in drawing ram air through a heat exchanger. May be used to compress the air required to drive the turbine wheel. It is a rotating part of an aircraft cooling turbine.

OXYGEN SYSTEM,AIRCRAFT SURVIVAL KIT

A system designed as a component of an aircraft survival kit to provide emergency breathing oxygen under varying conditions such as bailout or failure of main oxygen supply. Consists of oxygen bottles, regulator and may include personal leads assembly providing an oxygen manual release, necessary hoses and fittings to carry oxygen and communications from survival kit to crew members pressure suit and/or helmet.

REFRIGERATION UNIT,AIR CYCLE,AIRCRAFT

A unit designed to provide cool air in an aircraft air conditioning system for distribution to cabin and/or compartments. It is an air cycle type unit using air as the refrigerant media. Basically consists of a cooling turbine and a heat exchanger. Performs cooling but does not condition air. It is used in conjunction with control valves but in itself has no means for controlling the temperature or the air it is providing.

REGULATOR,AIR PRESSURE,AIRCRAFT CABIN

A regulator providing controlled pressurization of an aircraft cabin and/or compartments by regulating discharge air. Consists of a preset automatic pressure controller and a valve which discharges air to the atmosphere. May contain an electric motor driven fan. See CONTROLLER, AIR PRESSURE, AIRCRAFT CABIN.

SCROLL HOUSING,AIRCRAFT COOLING TURBINE

A scroll shaped item which is a component part of a cooling turbine. It acts as a housing for the turbine wheel and/or impeller wheel. Assists in creating and/or maintaining pressure buildup. Contains inlet and outlet and is of one piece construction. It may include a nozzle ring, a baffle and the like. Excludes HOUSING, SUPERCHARGER.

SEPARATOR,WATER,AIRCRAFT AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

An item which separates free moisture or water vapor from the compressed airstream in an aircraft air conditioning system after it is discharged from a cooling turbine. Provides moisture free air for cabin and/or compartments. Normally consists of a cylindrical or oval shaped shell with an inlet and outlet port and a drain port, a cylindrical, rectangular or conical shape condenser, and a device to collect the moisture after it leaves the condenser. May include an internal bypass valve. Generally consists of two types: (1) the condenser-eliminator type which collects the moisture on a tubular type core after it leaves the condenser and runs to the bottom and drains out; (2) the swirl type causing the moist air to swirl rapidly as it leaves the condenser throwing the moisture against the shell where it collects and runs down to drain.

TURBINE,AIRCRAFT COOLING

A nonpositive displacement mechanical device designed to provide cool air in aircraft air conditioning systems. Cool air or reduction in temperature is obtained when the heat or energy of compressed air is removed by converting it to work or mechanical energy to drive an impeller wheel. Compressed air is directed through nozzle vanes and impinged upon the blades of a turbine wheel creating rotary motion which drives an impeller wheel. Consists of an impeller wheel, a turbine wheel matched with a nozzle ring on a bearing mounted shaft within a scroll type housing(s).

TURBINE WHEEL,AIRCRAFT COOLING TURBINE

An item consisting of blades or vanes equally spaced around the periphery or face of a hub, rotor or wheel. Designed to receive the energy of compressed air directed through nozzle vanes and impinged upon the blades of the turbine wheel creating rotary energy and motion. Drives an impeller or fan and discharges cool air. Consists of a single one piece wheel. It is a rotating part of an aircraft cooling turbine.

An item consisting of blades or vanes equally spaced around the periphery or face of a hub, rotor, or wheel. Designed to receive the energy of compressed air directed through nozzle vanes and impinged upon the blades of the turbine wheel creating rotary energy and motion. Drives an impeller or fan and discharges cool air. Consists of two matched wheels, one smaller than the other, mounted together to form a single turbine wheel. It is a rotating part of an aircraft cooling turbine.

TANK,LIQUID OXYGEN CONVERTER

A tank consisting of an inner and outer shell using a vacuum between the shells to prevent conduction of heat. It stores and maintains oxygen in a liquid state. Excludes CYLINDER, COMPRESSED GAS.

PUMP,AXIAL PISTONS

A positive displacement device which utilizes the reciprocating motion of a multiple number of parallel pistons arranged axially in a cylinder barrel as a means of transferring a liquid from one place to another. The pistons are actuated by revolving the cylinder barrel at an angle to the drive shaft axis or by a tilting box when the cylinder barrel revolves on the drive shaft. The piston displacement may be fixed or variable. It is designed to be driven by a prime mover which is not an integral part of the pump.

A variable speed drive consisting of one or more hydraulic motors and speed reducing gear assemblies integrally mounted and designed to convert hydraulic energy into output shaft torque.

A tank which is a component of a constant speed drive installation designed to store oil and release oil, as required for lubrication and operation of the drive.

CAP,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

An item designed to attach to and enclose the cylinder bore of a linear actuating cylinder opposite the actuating end. It may have facilities for mounting the actuating cylinder assembly. PISTON,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

A cylindrical item which moves or reciprocates in a linear actuating cylinder to convert fluid energy to mechanical force. It may include an integral rod.

ROD,PISTON,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

A cylindrical item with one end designed to mate with the piston of a linear actuating cylinder. The external end is designed for the attachment of a connection or the connection may be an integral part of the rod. The rod is designed to extend through a linear actuating cylinder cap, or the like.

CAP,ACCUMULATOR

A cap having inlet and/or outlet ports. It is designed to mate with the end(s) of a hydraulic or pneumatic accumulator cylinder.

SERVOVALVE,HYDRAULIC

An item which controls both the direction and the rate of flow of fluid in direct response to a primary control of comparatively low level force. It is used for positioning a linear actuating cylinder assembly, and for controlling the rate of travel of the piston. The primary control force may be mechanical, hydraulic, and/or electrical.

HEAD,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

An item designed to attach to the actuating end of a linear cylinder. It has an orifice to accommodate a piston rod and packing, bearing, or the like to retain fluid in the cylinder assembly. HEAD,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

POWER UNIT,RAM AIR,EMERGENCY

A device which includes a turbine, governor, speedsensing device, and a gear box. Its power source is ram air. It is designed to produce a predetermined output shaft speed to operate a hydraulic pump and/or an electric generator drive, which furnishes emergency power to aircraft in case of hydraulic and/or electrical system failure. The unit may include the pump and/or the generator. For items which provide power during normal aircraft operation, see DRIVE, CONSTANT SPEED (as modified).

CYLINDER BLOCK,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

A flat, circular, replaceable device, with or without a centrally located hole, designed to remove solid particles from fluids ranging in density from heavy liquids to gases. The removal of particles is accomplished by porous, fibrous or shredded material (metallic or non-metallic) which retains the solid particles in the fluid passing through it. It may be encased and used as a single item or stacked to form a fluid filter element. Excludes DISK, SOLID, PLAIN; DIAPHRAGM (as modified); STRAINER ELEMENT, SEDIMENT; and WIRE FABRIC.

SLEEVE,DIRECTIONAL CONTROL LINEAR VALVE

A cylindrical item with an opening throughout its length which may be of cylindrical or other cross-sectional shape. It has external grooves for fluid flow, and may have external packing grooves. This item provides internal porting for various inlet and outlet ports of a directional control linear valve.

SLIDE,DIRECTIONAL CONTROL LINEAR VALVE

An item which may have a cylindrical or other cross-sectional shape, with recess areas on the periphery. It is designed to control the flow direction in a linear directional control valve by the selection of various inlet and outlet ports in a sleeve or the valve body. The slide reciprocates thus mating recess areas with the various ports in the sleeve or valve body. It may have an off (no flow) position.

SERVOCYLINDER ASSEMBLY,HYDRAULIC

An assembly consisting of two or more hydraulic servocylinders on a common mounting, with one or more servocylinders performing a separate function unrelated to the function(s) of the remaining cylinder(s). Excludes a servocylinder with two or more cylinders which performs a single function.

ACTUATOR,ELECTRO-HYDROSTATIC,LINEAR

A self-contained power transmitting device designed to convert electrical energy into controlled hydraulic force, in the form of linear (straight line) hydraulic movement. Comprised of an electrical motor(s), gear box(es), hydraulic cylinders, limit switch(es), and such accessories as required for the specific moving and positioning of other components.

RING,CAM

A ring-like item with elliptic chambers of cams and the like on the interior surface to provide a continuous contact with cam followers like the plungers and or the pistons. The item has the capability to be a functional part of both a radial piston hydraulic motor and a radial piston hydraulic pump, or the like.

INDICATOR,FILTER WARNING,AIRCRAFT HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

A mechanical indicator used on aircraft hydraulic system to provide a visual warning signal when a filter needs cleaning or changing.

FREQUENCY MULTIPLIER

An electronic device for delivering an output wave whose frequency is a multiple of the input frequency. It may also provide incidental signal amplification.

TUNER,RADIO FREQUENCY

An electronic device consisting of the necessary elements to establish the upper and lower limits and to effect the variation (continuous or in steps) of the frequency of a tuned circuit by means of an integral variable capacitor, inductor, cavity or line. Excludes hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and screwjacks.

AMPLIFIER-DETECTOR

An electronic assembly which has the dual function of amplification and detection (demodulation). It has one or more amplifier circuits and one or more detector circuits. The circuits may be independent of each other with separate input/output terminations or they may be cascaded (series aiding) to provide a single output signal resulting from a single input signal. AMPLIFIER-FREQUENCY MULTIPLIER

An item having the dual function of an amplifier, and of deriving an output signal which is some multiple frequency of an input signal. May utilize electron tubes, transistors, or similar devices.

A device for data input by key depression which causes the generation of the selected character, numeral or the like.

ELECTRONIC COMPONENT,REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM

An item consisting of more than one(1) specially designed elements used to form an assembly. The item is unique in design for the remote operation of the space vehicle. Do not use this name if a more specific item name exists.

SYNTHESIZER,ELECTRICAL FREQUENCY

An item with the combined functions of a FREQUENCY DIVIDER and a FREQUENCY MULTIPLIER. It provides a multiplicity of discrete output signals harmonically related to a standard source frequency, that may be utilized in radio receivers, transmitters, musical instruments, test equipment, density of rapidly selectable individual communication frequency bandwidth.
